The Sheffield Star has revealed that the Blades have agreed a deal ‘in the region of £6m’ for their star man, who will now finalise his return to the Midlands outfit.

However, in a more worrying development, the update has explained that Sheffield United aren’t expected to give Wilder that money to reinvest into the team.

Instead, they state that the money brought in from Hamer and Brooks will cover a ‘shortfall’ as the club readjust to life without parachute payments in what is their third consecutive year at this level.

“The suggestion from Bramall Lane sources is that United will have to find a replacement for one of the division’s best players in the loan market rather than find a like-for-like replacement.

“Any hopes from Unitedites of the incoming cash paying for Harry Souttar are set to be dashed. The majority of the money from the sales of Andre Brooks and Hamer has instead been earmarked to cover the shortfall of income rather than funding a recruitment drive of similar levels.”

This is obviously not the news that Sheffield United fans wanted to hear, and some will be disappointed that they have only managed to get £6m for Hamer.

Of course, his contract situation is a key reason for that, but you could argue that the club would’ve been better off keeping Hamer for another year and letting him leave on a free, especially as the play-offs now go down to eight teams.

But, the financial situation has dictated the summer plans, and fans will want clarity from the owners on exactly what the plan moving forward is.

The loss of parachute payments was always going to have an impact, which everyone understands, but it doesn’t feel like the balance is right this summer, and with no major funds seemingly available, it’s hard to envisage how this campaign can be a successful one for Sheffield United.
