Hammarby IF have signed Danish veteran striker Nadia Nadim on loan from AC Milan. The loan deal will last until the summer, or half way through the Damallsvenskan season.

Nadim told club media: “I am very excited! Hammarby is a big club in Sweden that has done very well in recent years.”

Nadim fled her home in Herat, Afghanistan at age 11 and arrived in Denmark. It was here where she started playing football.

She has played across the world in her long and successful career. From Denmark, to the US, England and France, the versatile player adds years of experience to an unbelievable young Hammarby side.

She also said: “I have experienced the atmosphere once before when I was sitting in the stands during a men’s match a few years ago. I remember there were a lot of flags and passion from the audience and I am looking forward to experiencing it on the women’s side as a player.”

Nadim has won titles in the NWSL with Portland Thorns and France with Paris Saint-Germain. She is also the all time top goalscorer for Racing Louisville.

Hammarby’s sporting director, Johan Lager, told the club media: “We wanted to bring in another offensive player to the squad, to increase competition and become less vulnerable to injuries. In addition, we get a training environment with a lot of good players who will develop each other.

“With Nadia Nadim, we get an experienced player, who has played at the highest level for many years and who is very motivated and aims to be selected for Denmark’s European Championship squad this summer.”

He continued: “She comes from Milan this season and is ready to step in at full speed. Normally we tend to be cautious with loans, but in this case it suited both Nadia and Hammarby.

“We are grateful that Milan have been flexible in this deal. It feels incredibly fun to bring in a player like Nadia to Hammarby.”

The striker has scored 38 goals in 105 games for Denmark. She made her debut for the national team at the age of 21. An exemption was granted to allow her to play for Denmark early. This was despite only being a citizen for 3 years instead of the expected 5.

She was instrumental in their run for silver in the 2017 European Championship. Nadim scored in the quarter and semi-finals, as well as in their final defeat to the Netherlands. The striker reached 100 caps in 2022 and hopes to be part of the squad in the summer in Switzerland.
