England overturned an early deficit to beat RD Congo 2-1 in the World Cup last 32 on Wednesday, captain Harry Kane striking twice late to finally beat the outstanding Lionel Mpasi.
L'Équipe rated Kane 8 and Lionel Mpasi 8, noting the goalkeeper’s succession of stops that sustained RD Congo’s lead until the closing stages.
Brian Cipenga finished coolly on seven minutes from Chancel Mbemba’s long pass, and Yoane Wissa later clipped the post on 42 after Aaron Wan-Bissaka burst clear.
Mpasi frustrated Jude Bellingham with two first-half headers saved, then a dangerous effort after the interval, and he almost conceded a penalty on 43. Axel Tuanzebe produced a superb last-ditch tackle to deny Kane.
Kane struck on 75 and 86 minutes with his 12th and 13th World Cup goals, turning the tie after earlier chances had been repelled.
Bellingham was marked 6, Mbemba 6 for an assured display, and Cipenga 7. Wissa received 3 after missing his best chance, Tuanzebe 4 as his grip slipped late, while England’s Djed Spence took 3 and Nico O'Reilly 4.
