A comparison between Southampton, Portsmouth, Brighton and Bournemouth for their summer transfer spending

Southampton and Portsmouth were both quite active in the transfer market as they prepared for another Championship season.

The Saints will be aiming to earn promotion to the Premier League at the second attempt, while Pompey are targeting an improvement on their 18th place finish in 2025/26.

The two rivals will also be targeting a win against each other after they shared the spoils in their league meetings in the previous campaign.

But Brighton and Bournemouth are the two other south coast clubs that are thriving at the moment, with the sides both competing in the Premier League for another campaign.

And they even have European seasons to contend with this year, with the Seagulls in the Conference League and the Cherries competing in the Europa League.

Southampton’s summer spend

Southampton spent a total of £22.7 million to bring in a total of six permanent additions to the first team squad over the summer.

George Long arrived as a free agent after his exit from Norwich City, while Divin Mubama and Zach Abbott both joined on loan.

But the bulk of their summer spend came from the signings of Lewis Dobbin, Daniel Peretz, Cycle Larin and Keven Schlotterbeck.

The Saints also secured a deal to bring James Ward-Prowse back to the club in a deal valued at around £940,000.

Portsmouth had the most limited budget of the four south coast clubs this summer, with the Hampshire outfit spending a total of £8.9 million trying to improve their squad.

John Mousinho’s side are in their third year back in the Championship, and will be hoping they can bridge the gap to the likes of Southampton this season.

Mark Milovanovic, Abu Kamara, Rocco Shein, Daniel Bielica, Luke Brooke-Smith, Iyad Mohamed and Eoin Kenny all joined on a permanent basis in the summer, along with Tyrese Shade and Odin Bailey.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth also completed loan moves for Jayden Meghoma, Benjamin Arthur and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

Brighton’s summer spend

Brighton qualified for the Conference League last season with an eighth-place finish in the Premier League table.

And the Seagulls have responded with a transfer spend worth £154.6 million in a bid to bolster Fabian Hurzeler’s squad.

The most notable addition was Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur, with Zadok Yohanna, Pascal Struijk and Chea Andrés all also joining in big money moves.

Brighton signed Femi Azeez from Millwall, as well as Jaouen Hadjam, Costinha, Michael Svoboda, Matías Orozco and Rodrigo Rego in what was a busy few months for the club.

AFC Bournemouth’s summer spend

Andoni Iraola departed as head coach at the end of the previous campaign after leading the Cherries to sixth in the table, with Marco Rose coming in as his replacement.

And the Premier League side responded with a total transfer spend of £69.3 million.

Bournemouth’s major summer additions included António Silva and Ávaro Rodríguez from Benfica and Elche, with Álex Jiménez and Juanlu Sánchez also joining permanently.

The south coast club also paid a loan fee to sign Michele Di Gregorio on loan from Juventus to bolster their goalkeeper options.
