Huddersfield are reportedly lining up a loan for Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young ahead of the 2026-27 season. Sunderland are said to have vetted suitors, with Huddersfield expected to get approval to borrow the 19-year-old England youth international.

Young is highly regarded at the Stadium of Light and has already logged senior minutes. After a spell with Darlington, he enjoyed two productive loans at Salford City in League Two. He featured at Wembley as Salford lost 3-0 to Notts County in last season’s play-off final.

The keeper has caps at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level, and received an under-21 call-up last year. A move to Huddersfield would provide another step in his senior development. Huddersfield brought in Owen Goodman on loan last summer before he switched to Barnsley mid-season.

Young is not the only Sunderland goalkeeper in the frame this summer. Wrexham have joined Millwall in showing interest in Anthony Patterson, who is said to be valued at £8 million to £10 million if he departs permanently. There have been claims of loan interest despite that price range, after he spent the second half of last season away from Sunderland.

Wrexham’s pursuit could have a knock-on effect for Arthur Okonkwo, with suggestions the Welsh club may allow last season’s goalkeeper to move on if they land Patterson. Sunderland’s goalkeeping department is drawing attention on two fronts, with Young’s next step likely to be another loan and Patterson’s future one to watch.
