Hull ‘to sign’ Joe Gelhardt as Leeds enter talks amid rival interest | OneFootball

Joe Gelhardt is set for a permanent move to Hull as Leeds United continue to reshape their squad after a heavy summer outlay.

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Hull intended to bring him back but waited until late in the window, then accelerated when Birmingham City came close. Talks with Leeds are under way and the fee remains unclear.

Leeds have spent the best part of £80m and are trimming numbers. Pascal Struijk has been sold to Brighton, while Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier have joined Manchester United and Arsenal on free transfers.

Further exits are expected this week. Sebastiaan Bornauw is closing in on Hamburg, and Lucas Perri is due for a Thursday medical at Torino on a loan-to-buy, after Leeds confirmed the signing of Trafford.

Gelhardt joined Leeds six years ago and has had loans at Sunderland and Hull, rejoining the Tigers for 2025-26 and contributing to 21 goals as they won promotion. Hull explored alternatives earlier this summer, with the owner vocal on social media.

Interest gathered elsewhere too, with Birmingham links last week and a £4.5m approach from Wrexham floated over the weekend.

Gelhardt is in the final year of his deal. He showed flashes under Marcelo Bielsa in the Premier League, including notable moments against Brighton, Wolves, Chelsea and Norwich, but Daniel Farke never truly turned to him.

A £4.5m price has been mentioned and would feel low, with £3m suggested last year before his uptick. Selling to a Premier League rival strengthens that view, and anything under £7m would feel on the low side, though the move suits the player.
