‘I give my word’ – Atletico Madrid CEO makes his stance clear on Barcelona and Julian Alvarez | OneFootball

It now seems practically impossible for Julian Alvarez to be joining FC Barcelona this season. Despite the efforts from both the Catalan club and the player himself, it now seems quite clear that Atletico Madrid are unwilling to negotiate for the player under any circumstances.

However, the stance of the Madrid-based club is quite peculiar and rather stubborn as well. In a recent interview with Movistar, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has acknowledged that the club would be open to selling the player if the need arises, just not to Barcelona.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, the club’s CEO had the following to say about the whole situation:

“Julian is not doing well, he’s really upset because there have been people who have taken it upon themselves to deceive and confuse him… We are not going to negotiate with Barcelona. The decision is firm.”

He confirmed that the club would be open to alternative destinations for the player as long as it is not the Catalan club:

“My dream is for Julian to stay at Atletico if he wants to. We’ll look for an alternative if he wants to leave the club, but never Barcelona.”

To take things even further, Gil Marin expressed his anger at the whole situation and even gave ‘his word’ that the player will not be joining Barça under any circumstances:

“We are even more angry, we are disgusted by the lies, the lack of transparency and professionalism of Barca. Julian Alvarez will not be transferred to Barca. I give my word.”

Unless something monumental happens at this point, it seems practically impossible for the Argentinian forward to join his dream club this summer. Ultimately, this entire situation has escalated into something unseen in football before, and it is all thanks to Atletico Madrid’s inability to resolve matters professionally.
