Within hours, Ibaigane confirmed three sales and two loans across Athletic and Bilbao Athletic, prioritising income while keeping a measure of control over departing players. The move signals a shift towards deals that balance finances and future sporting interests.
The club said in a statement that sales bring a fixed fee, with performance-related add-ons, a sell-on percentage and a right of first refusal on future moves. For the two prospects leaving the B team, a buy-back option is also retained.
Unai Gómez has joined Udinese for more than four million euros. Ibon Sánchez has moved to Cádiz, who also intend to sign Izeta, and Aimar Duñabeitia has signed for Sporting de Gijón.
The structure allows Athletic to repatriate players if their progress merits a return, and to bank further sums from achieved objectives and any onward transfer. A recent example of this model’s potential is Real Madrid, who have raised 108 million this summer through exits of academy and fringe players.
On loans, the current rule limits clubs to a maximum of six across all categories and countries, with an exemption for under-21s who have spent at least three seasons at their club. Ibai Sanz and Eder García have joined Córdoba in the Segunda.
