We were listing off Chelsea’s midfield options earlier this week, when we realised we had forgotten Valentin Barco.

The former Strasbourg man is in a funny position – it’s been an open secret for so long that we were going to sign him from our sister club that it felt like the move never actually happeed. The fact he wasn’t able to take part in any of our preseason games only helped keep him out of the picture.

But he’s now training with the group and preparing to make his debut, and as part of that he spoke to the club’s official website about what sort of player he is and what he will bring to the team.

Barco promises to give everything for Chelsea and his teammates

“I’m technical. I like to play with the ball, to touch the ball and have control of the game,” the Argentine said,

“I can make good passes as well, but the principle is that I give everything on the pitch for my teammates.”

We’d imagine he will see a fair number of minutes off the bench to start the season, and he faces a tough task breaking into XAbi Alonso’s starting XI.

In other news…

As the transfer deadline closes in, Chelsea have to make some big decisions about the hefty asking prices they’ve put on some of their players.

Whatever happens in terms of an Enzo replacement, it increasingly feels like Chelsea’s original £120m asking price is no longer going to cut it.
