A heartfelt tribute to Luis Cela, CD Castellón’s eternal captain, recalls a life defined by football, fierce character and an unbroken bond with the club.
Per El Periódico Mediterráneo, he was born in Zamora on 8 February 1937 and, at 18, Real Madrid signed him. Football became his trade and his nature coloured his game.
Terse and intense, he often looked angry, yet maintained he was speaking loudly, not shouting. Restless and independent, he did things his way, but was warm, honest and widely loved.
Vicente del Bosque wrote that, for all his particular ways, he had a generous heart and always gave everything. Asked recently if he was happy, he named football, Pilar and four children, then said there was nothing more to want.
His recall of matches, results and line-ups was remarkable decades on, much preserved in El Eterno Capitán, coordinated by Guillermo Sahanuja and Emilio Nadal. For his family, CD Castellón and Luis Cela were inseparable, from Castalia to Bovalar.
He embodied Infrafútbol, the truth in tracksuit and shoes. Promotions, relegations and reinvention marked him, even shifting from midfield to sweeper late on, taking risks with clarity then playing down the bravery.
He fought to the end. A granddaughter thanked him for time, love and jokes. The family salute Jorge’s devoted care. As the flags unfurl under the sun, memory returns to old glory, and for today, Luis Cela.
