Independiente strike at the right moment to beat Lanús in Avellaneda

Independiente defeated Lanús 2-0 in a match where a burst of effectiveness in the second half allowed them to secure the victory. The match, corresponding to the fifth round of the 2026 Apertura Tournament, took place tonight at the Libertadores de América-Ricardo Enrique Bochini stadium.

For the "Rojo," forwards Matías Abaldo and Gabriel Ávalos were the goal scorers, netting at the 11th and 17th minutes of the second half.

Towards the end, the home team suffered the expulsion of midfielder Luciano Cabral, who saw the red card in the 5th minute of added time.

Thanks to this result, the Avellaneda team climbs to second place in Zone A with nine points. Meanwhile, the team led by Mauricio Pellegrino dropped to fifth place, remaining with eight points.

The first clear chance was for the home team at the 18th minute, after a cross from Facundo Zabala that Gabriel Ávalos headed wide. Before the break, Santiago Montiel also had his chance with a shot that went just wide after a deflection.

The effectiveness came in the second half. At the 11th minute, Matías Abaldo received a long pass from Ignacio Malcorra, took advantage of a mistake in the visitor's defense, and scored at the far post for the 1-0. Just six minutes later, Lautaro Millán sent a precise cross that Ávalos headed in to seal the final 2-0.

Lanús tried to respond at the 25th minute with a free kick by Matías Sepúlveda that went close to the post, but they couldn't threaten again. At the 50th minute, the VAR intervened for the referee to expel Cabral for a strong foul in the central area.
