Inter Miami have confirmed their sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with center-back Tomas Aviles joining the Herons from Argentinian side Racing Club.
The signings just keep coming for Inter Miami. It seems that having a certain Lionel Messi at the club does wonders for recruitment, as the Herons have strengthened with their backline for the future with the addition of Aviles.
The 19-year-old made 20 appearances for Racing in 2023, and has also represented the Chile U20 national team before switching his allegiance to Argentina earlier this year. Aviles has signed a deal through the 2026 MLS season with options for the next two seasons and will take up one of Miami's U22 Initiative & international roster slots.
"We're very happy to sign Tomas, a prospect we feel has a very bright future ahead," chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said. "Tomas is a talented young player who will help us bolster our backline."
"This is an exciting opportunity for me and I can’t wait to represent Inter Miami," Aviles said. "I will give everything for this Club and do what I can to help us meet our objectives."
As Aviles is quite young, it remains to be seen what kind of role he'll take on upon joining Miami. Head coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino may want him to feature every now and then to ease him into MLS, or he may want to send him out on loan to get immediate experience.
The Herons and Messi will take on Orlando City in their next game in the round of 32 in the 2023 Leagues Cup at DRV PNK Stadium on August 2.
