Sunderland’s move for Jack Grealish is set to end in disappointment after Everton agreed a season-long loan with Manchester City, with a medical due on Tuesday morning, according to David Ornstein.

The Black Cats registered late-window interest while exploring another high-level attacking addition for Régis Le Bris. Grealish was always an ambitious target, with Everton pushing to bring him back.

Several clubs enquired about the former Aston Villa captain, but only Everton were willing to meet City’s terms. That effectively closes the door on Sunderland before the 11pm deadline.

Wages of around £300,000 per week made any deal complex, and the player’s preference to return to Everton gave David Moyes’ side a clear advantage.

Sunderland remain active and could yet add to Le Bris’ squad before the window shuts. Malick Fofana and Geny Catamo have both been linked, while a deal for Kevin Danso is progressing.
