João Palhinha’s move to Benfica has gathered pace after he flew into Lisbon on Saturday, with the transfer entering its final stages.

According to Record, Bayern have allowed the midfielder to stay in Lisbon for an extra day and he might not return to Bavaria if the final elements of his departure from the German champions are resolved in the meantime.

Palhinha arrived carrying several suitcases. His trip coincided with Bayern’s 2-1 Supercup win over Borussia Dortmund. At the airport he said he remains a Bayern player, was using two days off to be with his children and intended to fly back to Munich on Sunday.

Sporting director Max Eberl, speaking after the trophy win, acknowledged talks are ongoing, noting the Portugal international was visiting family and that a club from his home country is interested, adding they would see what happens in the coming days.

Benfica and Bayern have reached an understanding on a €14 million fee plus €5 million in add-ons, with only the remaining formalities on Palhinha’s release left before a switch to the Estádio da Luz can be completed.
