Joe Anderson has thanked Sunderland and their supporters after completing a permanent move to Barrow on an 18-month deal for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old departs after three years on Wearside.

In an Instagram post, the defender thanked the club, staff, players and fans for three years, adding it had been a pleasure. Sunderland also shared a farewell message in the post.

Anderson joined from Everton in January 2023 and made seven senior appearances, the last in April last year. He spent 2023-24 on loan at Shrewsbury, then returned in the summer. He was told he was not in Régis Le Bris’ plans and trained away from the first team.

Barrow announced him as their third signing of the month, following goalkeeper Killian Barrett and Stoke loanee Freddie Anderson. Head coach Paul Gallagher said the defender knows what it takes to operate at higher levels and is eager to work with him immediately.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said Anderson had faced a difficult spell without regular games but praised his character and application. He added the move offers a platform for the next stage of his career.

After signing, Anderson said he was delighted and that talks with the manager convinced him quickly. He hopes to contribute on the pitch and bring leadership off it, aiming to help the squad edge up the table. He described himself as a modern defender who values clean sheets.
