John Herdman has been appointed Indonesia head coach, succeeding Patrick Kluivert. The Indonesian federation, PSSI, announced the move on Saturday, saying his outstanding track record was central to the decision.

Kluivert’s tenure ended in October after defeat to Iraq confirmed the team’s failure to reach the 2026 World Cup.

More than two months on, the Englishman, 50, takes the reins. The former Toronto coach previously led Canada’s women’s and men’s national teams.

He is the only coach to have qualified both the women’s and men’s teams of the same country for a World Cup, in this case Canada.

He took the women’s side to the finals in 2007 and 2011 and won Olympic bronze in 2012 and 2016, then oversaw Canada’s qualification for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
