Robertson began and ended his playing career at the City Ground, split by a spell with local rivals Derby. He was central to Forest’s European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980.

He crossed for Trevor Francis to head the only goal against Malmö in Munich in 1979. A year later he scored in the 1-0 win over Hamburg at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

Under Brian Clough he moved from central midfield to the wing and was later voted Forest’s greatest player in a 2015 Nottingham Post poll. Former captain John McGovern likened him to Ryan Giggs with two good feet.

He won 28 caps for Scotland over a five-year international career and was selected for the 1978 and 1982 World Cups. In later life he lived with Parkinson’s disease.

After playing, Robertson coached alongside Martin O’Neill at Wycombe Wanderers, Leicester and Celtic, where the pair enjoyed early success despite Robertson having grown up a Rangers supporter.
