Jonathan David explains why he struggled at Juventus | OneFootball

Jonathan David has rediscovered his goalscoring touch since moving on loan from Juventus to Atletico Madrid and has opened up about the struggles he experienced during his time with the Bianconeri.

He joined Juventus as a free agent at the start of last season and was expected to replace Dusan Vlahovic, who the Bianconeri had placed on the market at the time. However, that plan did not work out, with David enduring a difficult first campaign at the club.

His first season was ultimately a total write-off, despite playing under two managers. Juventus therefore believed the best next step for the Canadian was to leave the club this summer and find an environment where he could regain his confidence and rediscover his form.

They sent him out on loan to Atletico Madrid, where he has become one of their finest players in the last few matches. If he continues to perform at that level, he could potentially overdeliver there and make the Spanish side trigger the clause to make the move permanent.

David Found Life Difficult at Juventus

Juve want that to happen because David does not suit their manager’s profile for a striker, while the Canadian would likely also want to remain where he is performing well and getting game time. His recent form at Atletico has allowed him to put his difficult Juventus spell behind him.

Speaking about his struggles at Juve, he said via Calciomercato:

“Since I arrived, you’ve clearly told me that the Juventus striker is the most criticized player in Italy. Last season? It was a very difficult season for me, I struggled to adapt to your football. Playing at a club like Juventus is complicated, there’s no time to adapt. Have I managed to settle in at Atletico? I think so, we get along well, Cholo instills a lot of confidence in his players and I appreciate that a lot.”

Atletico Has Given David Confidence

David’s comments underline how difficult he found adapting to Juventus and Italian football. The pressure surrounding the striker position made his adjustment even harder, while the lack of time to settle in contributed to his struggles.

At Atletico, however, he feels that he has been able to settle into his new environment. He specifically highlighted the confidence instilled in the players by Cholo, something he clearly appreciates.

With David now finding his goalscoring touch again, Juventus will hope his form continues to attract a permanent move. For the Canadian, remaining at Atletico could provide the opportunity to continue developing his confidence and playing regularly.
