This follows a report by Sport BILD stating that Jonas Urbig is set to play not only in the DFB Cup but also in key Bundesliga and Champions League matches in the new season. The 22-year-old is considered internally to be the designated successor to Manuel Neuer, whose career is currently expected to end in the summer of 2027.

However, ahead of the friendly against Aston Villa, Vincent Kompany made it clear that there is no doubt about the current pecking order.

“Manuel is our number one. But we love Jonas Urbig. We want to continue working on his improvement and development,” explained the Bayern coach.

At the same time, the Belgian emphasized that Urbig should continue to be developed in a targeted manner despite his role as the backup goalkeeper. The goalkeeper has already proven that he can hold his own at the highest level.

“He’s played in a cup final against Stuttgart and featured in important Champions League matches. The goal—and this comes as no surprise—is that we want to continue giving him playing time. When and how, we’ll see—but at the right moments,” said Kompany.

The coach’s statements align with Munich’s long-term strategy. Neuer remains the clear No. 1, even in what is likely his final season as a professional. Last season, the 22-year-old already gained valuable experience in important competitive matches, impressing with his confident performances. Club officials now intend to consistently build on this development.

Kompany made it clear, however, that the additional playing time for Urbig should in no way come at Neuer’s expense. Rather, FC Bayern intends to deploy the young goalkeeper strategically in select matches without calling into question the division of roles in goal.
