The 36-year-old has been heavily linked with a Bramall Lane return in recent times

Burnley's return to the Championship has coincided with mass uncertainty at Turf Moor, be it over who will take charge following Scott Parker's exit, as well as which players will remain as part of the squad for the 2026/27 season.

Just 12 months on from their promotion under the aforementioned former manager, the Clarets find themselves in the second tier once again for a third time since 2022, having spent six unbroken years as a Premier League club largely under Sean Dyche beforehand.

The East Lancashire club's fortunes appeared to have been decided for the vast majority of the season, having won just four of their 38 matches, with Wolverhampton Wanderers finishing only two points behind as the top-flight's bottom side, despite the fact Rob Edwards' team went over one half of the campaign without a league success.

They will be joined by West Ham United, who return to the Championship for the first time in 14 years, and whilst plenty of high-profile names and earners at the London Stadium have been the subject of major exit talk, so has Clarets captain and former England international, Kyle Walker.

Walker's move to Turf Moor last summer certainly raised eyebrows, but despite his experience of winning six Premier League titles at Manchester City, the 36-year-old was unable to help prevent an immediate relegation.

As such, it remains to be seen whether the full-back will remain in BB20 or move elsewhere, albeit talk of an emotional return to Sheffield United has now taken another financial-themed twist.

It has been well-documented that Chris Wilder is to conduct a major squad reshuffle at Bramall Lane following the Blades' 13th-placed finish in 2025/26.

Initially, it had been claimed that Walker fell into said category when it came to bolstering the 58-year-old's defensive department in S2, with the experienced figure also reaffirming in previous interviews that, whilst it may not happen, it is a "dream" of his to return to the Steel City outfit.

“I don’t know when that will be. I don’t know if they will want me," he once told former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville on The Overlap.

Walker's last game for the Blades ironically came in the Championship play-off final loss to Burnley in May 2009, before he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in a joint-deal with Kyle Naughton.

However, the defender does still have one year left on his current contract in the North West, and it has since emerged that United are facing a major stumbling block in terms of wages before any reunion could be agreed.

The Sheffield Star report that Walker would have to take a substantial wage reduction to realise his dream, and that this would have been the case regardless of the Championship's newly-implemented Squad Cost Rules.

The one-time UEFA Champions League winner has not played at Championship level since a loan spell with Queens Park Rangers during their 2010/11 title-winning campaign under Neil Warnock, and his subsequent trophy-laden career is certainly reflected by ESTIMATED wage earnings via Capology.

Whilst Burnley were said to have the lowest wage bill in the Premier League for the 2025/26 season at a weekly figure of £1,068,346, Walker is said to be the outright top earner on Alan Pace's payroll with an individual £75,000 per week earning.

The second-highest earner on said list was West Ham loanee, James Ward-Prowse on £57,000 per week, whilst the second-highest permanently contracted player, Josh Cullen, is a £20,000 sum behind that of Walker.

Capology also ESTIMATES that the Blades had the second-highest wage bill in the Championship behind Leicester City at £606,750 per week.

However, further emphasising the gulf in finances between the two sides, United's highest earner, Japhet Tanganga, is said to only earn an ESTIMATED £35,000 per week after his switch from Millwall last summer.

Therefore, this very much leaves the Sheffield native with a head versus heart decision, as what he has visioned for so long may not be the most financially rewarding decision, even after previously stating he would honour his Burnley contract after relegation.
