Released by FC Lorient on Tuesday, 33-year-old midfielder Laurent Abergel is expected to join OGC Nice. According to L'Équipe, he is expected to sign a three-year contract, with the club expected to confirm the move by the end of the week.

The surprise decision to release him came with a new project already lined up, despite three years left on his Lorient deal.

Abergel, who arrived from Ajaccio in 2019, became an emblematic captain at Lorient. He made 233 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing 14 assists. He lifted the Ligue 2 title in 2020 and 2025.

Deeply attached to the club, he had expressed disappointment this season after the announced departure of coach Olivier Pantaloni. He then chose to move on, saying after seven seasons he had given all he could, was grateful for the club’s trust, and, for personal reasons, wanted a new direction. He hoped the decision would be understood and felt he left having given everything.

The Marseille-born midfielder is due in Nice to complete the move and reunite with Pantaloni. He has taken the opportunity by negotiating an amicable exit with the Breton club.
