Lazio’s Offer for Spanish Defender Falls Short as Spurs Could Re-Enter the Race

Lazio are keen to recruit Spanish youngster Sergi Dominguez, but they have thus far failed to satisfy Dinamo Zagreb.

The Background

The Biancocelesti have identified the 21-year-old as the ideal successor for his compatriot, Mario Gila, who signed for AC Milan earlier this week. The Barcelona academy product moved to Dinamo Zagreb last summer, and produced a stellar first season in Croatia, helping the club win the domestic double.

Lazio Open Direct Talks With Dinamo Zagreb for Sergi Dominguez

On Thursday, Lazio Sporting Director Angelo Fabiani travelled to Croatia for face-to-face talks with Dinamo officials, but he returned empty-handed, as his offer wasn’t enough to convince his counterparts to part ways with their prized asset.

The Figures

According to Sky Sport Italia journalist Manuele Baiocchini, Lazio proposed an initial loan deal worth €3.5 million, with an option to buy for another €8 million. On the other hand, Dinamo’s asking price for Dominguez rose to €15 million. Therefore, the two clubs continue to be separated by a significant gap.

Could Spurs Rekindle Their Interest in Dominguez

In the meantime, Il Corriere della Sera (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) warns Lazio about Tottenham Hotspur, who could decide to pursue the player again. The North Londoners had Dominguez on their shortlist early on, but then turned their attention to their midfield revamp, signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

But after selling Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina, Spurs could decide to launch a concrete attempt to buy the Spanish centre-back, and they certainly have the means to blow Lazio out of the water. This wouldn’t be the first time the Aquile miss out on a top target despite starting as the frontrunners. They have already allowed Deportivo La Coruña to pip them for Jonathan Asp Jensen.
