Outlet Transfer Feed dropped the news early on, and it hit like a cold shower. Leeds United have stepped back from signing Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet. They are not alone in doing so either. Inter Milan and Como have both pulled back from the table this summer for the exact same reason. His knee. Or, more accurately, deep concerns over the state of it.

It seems harsh when you glance at his numbers. Brutal, even. Solet is coming off the absolute best campaign of his career. The 26-year-old Frenchman was a brick wall in Serie A last term, racking up 35 appearances and starting 34 times. That is 2,962 minutes of top-tier Italian football. He recorded 10 clean sheets, completed 90% of his passes, made 202 clearances, and won 37 out of 40 attempted tackles.

That tackle success rate is ludicrous. An average match rating of 7.23 made him one of the most reliable defenders in Italy. Throw in three Coppa Italia outings and his full season tally reads 38 games, three goals, and an assist. On paper, he looks like a proper player. A complete bargain waiting to happen, which makes three separate recruitment teams walking away all the more telling. The knee issue is clearly big enough to override an otherwise flawless CV.

Farke’s defensive headache

Leeds United need a central defender, badly. Daniel Farke has got the club back into the Premier League, but the existing defensive options lack the sheer physicality and technical consistency needed to survive in the top flight. Bringing in someone with European pedigree made total sense on the surface. Joe Rodon is solid enough, sure, but he cannot carry the backline on his own across an intense 38-game season. He needs a partner who can dominate in the air and mop up second balls without flinching.

Solet fit the profile on the pitch. Standing tall, aggressive, comfortable playing out from the back. Exactly what Farke wants in a back-four anchor.

Walking away is still the right call. The only call, really.

When three different scouting departments look at the same medical reports and reach the exact same conclusion, you pay attention. Knee issues in an elite footballer are bad news. They can range from minor cartilage wear to something that completely strips away player mobility and recovery time. Solet’s game depends heavily on his physical power. Those 202 clearances and punishing tackles do not happen without explosive movement. Take away 10% of his burst, and those elite Serie A numbers simply will not translate to English football.

Udinese were always going to demand top money for a defender of his age and profile. You are looking at somewhere between £18-25m. Leeds cannot afford to throw that kind of money at a player whose joints might give out within 12 months. Premier League brings massive financial rewards, but burning a huge chunk of your budget on a lad who ends up spending more time on the treatment table than the pitch can sink a season before it even gets going.
