Newcastle United’s pursuit of Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, in a deal worth about £24.2 million, could clear the way for Leeds United to move for Nick Pope this summer.
The Chronicle reported this week that Leeds are assessing a move for Pope, 34, after failing to land the England international last August. He stayed at Newcastle, making 36 appearances and keeping 11 clean sheets last season.
With Karl Darlow out of contract and Lucas Perri enduring a difficult debut in West Yorkshire, Leeds want a new goalkeeper and are expected to revisit Pope.
Pope is entering the final 12 months of his contract and there is anticipation he might be allowed to leave for a minimal fee, with Leeds monitoring a potential deal.
It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had thrashed out an agreement for France Under-21s stopper Jaouen, 24. He is anticipated to sign a four-year contract and challenge a senior counterpart at St James’ Park rather than go straight in as No 1.
There is a feeling he would compete alongside a marquee arrival. John Ruddy is poised to depart at the end of his deal, Aaron Ramsdale has returned to Southampton after his loan, and James Trafford has again been linked, while Eddie Howe has hinted at targeting younger players.
