Anton Stach marked his Germany return against the Netherlands on Thursday, then issued a proud message afterwards.

The player said in a post: "Proud to be on the pitch for Germany again. Obviously disappointed that we couldn’t win yesterday. But we keep working."

Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as Germany head coach brought an immediate recall, with Stach named in a 44-man squad for Nations League games during the three-week September and October international break.

His strong first season at Leeds earned a first Germany call-up in nearly three years for March friendlies under Julian Nagelsmann.

He then looked on course for the World Cup squad before an ankle injury late in the season cast doubt. The injury was not serious, yet he was still omitted from Nagelsmann’s group for this summer’s tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

For the Nations League tie in the Netherlands, he was named on the bench. Nmecha put Germany ahead in the 32nd minute for 1-0. Stach replaced him four minutes after the hour mark, before Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo equalised in the 92nd for 1-1.
