Lens’ Matthieu Udol admits ‘disappointment’ at France squad omission | OneFootball

Matthieu Udol (30) featured on Zinédine Zidane’s expanded France squad for the upcoming international break, however, he failed to make the final cut. Speaking to Ligue 1 Plus after RC Lens’ 2-1 defeat to AS Monaco on Friday night, the full-back admitted that he was “disappointed”.

Udol, at 30, has never been called up to the France national team. He has endured a career of ups and downs. He has suffered four ACL injuries during his career, and it was only in the summer of 2025 that he finally left formative club FC Metz to play for a team that could be considered among the elite. For the first time in his career, he is now competing in the UEFA Champions League.

And he was dreaming of a first call-up to the France squad, but it was ultimately not to be. Left-back, Udol’s position, is a problem area for Zidane, who has recalled Adrien Truffert and has also called up Andy Diouf, whom he believes can fill in. Just hours after the squad announcement, Udol spoke to Ligue 1 Plus.

“Yes, I was disappointed [not to be called up]. It is normal when you are a competitor. You want to get there. Now, it is up to me to redouble my efforts and to be there next time around,” he said.
