Como 1907 goalkeeper Jean Butez (31) has been called up to replace his RC Lens fellow countryman Robin Risser (21) in the France squad for the international break, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Sunday evening.
Struggling with a fitness issue, Risser has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Nations League matches against Turkey, Belgium and Italy. Butez, who had been shortlisted by Zinédine Zidane, has been named to take his place.
For the 31-year-old, who came through the ranks at LOSC Lille, this first call-up to the France squad marks the culmination of a remarkable rise to prominence since his arrival in Italy in the winter of 2025. Having become an undisputed first-team regular under Cesc Fàbregas, Butez played a pivotal role in Como’s qualification for the Champions League following their fourth-place finish in Serie A last season.
Having started all five of his appearances in all competitions since the start of the 2026-27 season, Butez has conceded six goals and has not kept a single clean sheet.
