Liga F will bid farewell to one of its most historic clubs after Levante’s relegation was confirmed with a heavy defeat away to champions Barcelona on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Real Sociedad qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a successful away trip against Deportivo La Coruña.
Here, we will round up all of the action from Liga F match-day 27.
Levante’s relegation was confirmed with a heavy 5-0 defeat against Barcelona. Pere Romeu made wholesale changes following Barcelona’s UWCL semi-final win over Bayern Munich. The Blaugrana still had plenty of quality on the pitch to see off Levante at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Vicky López required just 15 minutes to open the scoring with a fierce strike from distance. Clàudia Pina then took the game away from Liga F’s basement side, netting in the 34th and 51st minutes to effectively seal maximum points. Carla Julià Martínez and Sydney Schertenleib then grabbed a goal apiece to pile the misery on Levante and seal another dominant victory on the night Barcelona were presented their Liga F trophy.
For Levante, the result marks the end of an era for a club that has won four league titles, six Copa de la Reina trophies, and two Supercopas. Levante has spent much of its time competing at the top end of the table, finishing in fourth spot as recently as 2023/24. But a reduction in investment in the last couple of years has ultimately resulted in their demotion to the second division.
Alhama are battling with DUX Logroño to avoid finishing in the other relegation spot. The team from Murcia temporarily reduced the gap to safety to two points with a 3-1 victory over Espanyol. Experienced forward Belén Martínez fired Alhama into a second-minute lead. Vega Montesinos then charged down an attempted clearance from the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 inside the opening 15 minutes. Phoenetia Browne reduced the arrears on the 30-minute mark, only for Yiyi to restore Alhama’s two-goal cushion after the break. The 28-year-old cleverly spun her defender to create the space to fire a low shot into the bottom corner.
Unfortunately for Alhama, the positive mood created by their victory was dampened by Logroño’s commanding 3-0 win over Madrid CFF. Annelie Leitner scored in her second successive game to give Logroño a narrow lead at the half-time interval. The scoreline remained a narrow one until Flavine Mawete added a second with a superb solo effort in the 85th minute. After picking up the ball in her own half, the attacker drove down the right flank and into the box before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper to net her third league goal of the season. Isina soon made it 3-0 to wrap up back-to-back home victories. As a result, Logroño are now five points clear of the drop with just three games left to play.
Real Sociedad secured European qualification with a 2-1 away win over Deportivo La Coruña at Riazor. The hosts established a first-minute lead thanks to Bárbara Latorre’s outrageous long-range effort that looped over Julia Arrula’s head and into the net. Trailing at the break, Real Sociedad proved why they are a top-three side with a second-half turnaround. Paula Fernández levelled the scoreline within two minutes of the restart, firing home after Nerea Eizagirre cleverly dummied Emma Ramírez’s low cross. Ramírez provided another assist for Cecilia Marcos to net a 71st-minute winner.
The third-placed side are now guaranteed a top-three finish. In fact, they could still finish in second place, with three points separating them from Real Madrid.
Elsewhere, Tenerife’s faint European hopes were quashed by a 1-1 draw against Granada. The Andalusian side took the lead just before the half mark following a mistake from Nayluisa Cáceres. Taking up a starting position outside the box, the goalkeeper attempted to stop a counter-attack, only for Lauri to win the ball first and roll it into the unguarded net. Tenerife were behind for just three minutes before Paulina Gramaglia headed in from Sakina Ouzraoui’s inviting delivery. However, the visitors were unable to push on for a winner, meaning it is now impossible for them to catch Real Sociedad in third spot.
Gio Garbelini inspired Atlético Madrid to a 4-0 victory over Eibar on Saturday. The Brazilian forward broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, just five minutes after coming off the bench. Vilde Bøe Risa then added a second from the penalty spot before Júlia Bartel took Atleti’s tally to three. There was still time left for Gio to latch onto an underhit backpass and round the goalkeeper to grab her second of the game.
Atleti’s local rivals, Real Madrid, warmed up for the Madrid derby with a 2-0 away win over Sevilla. Alba Redondo and Naomie Feller grabbed a goal apiece as Las Blancos recorded their seventh victory without conceding in the last nine league games.
Athletic Club’s Ane Azkona scored the decisive goal in Saturday’s away clash with Badalona. The 27-year-old slid a low shot beyond Carla Abdon in the 35th minute, taking her tally to six league goals for the season. Badalona’s failure to find a leveller ensured they fell to a third consecutive defeat.
Alhama’s win over Espanyol represented their first Liga F victory since beating Dépor 3-1 on October 5th.
Mawete and López both produced impressive efforts on match-day 27. However, we have picked Latorre’s unstoppable effort from distance as the standout strike of the weekend. Spotting Arrula slightly off her line, the Depor attacker produced an inch-perfect shot to whip the ball over the outstretched goalkeeper.
Alhama 3-1 Espanyol
Granada 1-1 Costa Adeje Tenerife
Badalona 0-1 Athletic Club
DUX Logroño 3-0 Madrid CFF
Sevilla 0-2 Real Madrid
Deportivo La Coruña 1-2 Real Sociedad
Atlético Madrid 4-0 Eibar
Barcelona 5-0 Levante
