Santos have advanced in a move for Lima from Fluminense and are likely to keep searching for two further reinforcements to complete Cuca’s squad. According to Globo.com, a left-back and a forward are the key priorities.

The push has intensified after possible injuries to Lucas Veríssimo, Neymar and Barreal. All three are due to undergo tests on Friday to assess problems sustained in Wednesday’s draw with Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil.

Cuca called the situation tough, pointing to a schedule across two competitions after an earlier elimination and to their deep run in the Copa Sudamericana. He added that losing three players when two had just arrived leaves the team in deficit.

Lima is viewed as a versatile option who could cover multiple roles. Cuca has identified him for that flexibility and wants the midfielder available for Wednesday’s first leg against Atlético-MG in the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.

The staff also see a new left-back as essential to ease the load on Escobar. With Vinicius Lira sidelined, Cuca recently deployed centre-back Luan Peres on the flank.

The club are mapping the market for a focal forward as cover for Gabigol. At present the only option in the box is Thaciano, who has 31 appearances and five goals this season.

Budget constraints remain a hurdle. Arthur and Rodinei joined with no transfer fee, and any further additions are expected to follow the same profile.
