Liverpool sign Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona | OneFootball

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on loan for the 2026/27 season, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance.

The Reds have moved quickly to address a serious problem in defence. Andoni Iraola’s side faced a shortage of senior centre-backs heading into the new Premier League campaign.

Araujo arrives at Anfield with considerable experience at the highest level, having made 213 appearances for Barcelona since making his senior debut in 2019.

The Uruguay international has also captained the Catalan giants and has played a key role in three La Liga title-winning campaigns.

The 27-year-old will wear the No.33 shirt at Liverpool and expressed his delight after completing his temporary move.

“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araujo told Liverpool’s official website.

“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.”

Araujo has won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and three Spanish Super Cups during his time at Camp Nou. He has also earned 27 caps for Uruguay.

His versatility should prove particularly useful for Liverpool. Primarily a centre-back, Araujo can also operate at right-back and brings a physical presence to the defensive line.

Liverpool have been forced into the market after several setbacks at the back.

Ibrahima Konate has departed, while Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet have both suffered significant injuries.

Joe Gomez has now joined them on the injury list after picking up a problem during pre-season. Araujo therefore arrives at a crucial time.

Despite injuries affecting his consistency in recent seasons, he remains a formidable defender.

He made 24 La Liga appearances last term, scoring three goals, while winning 67 percent of his aerial duels and 57 per cent of his ground duels.

Liverpool will hope the Barcelona captain can provide immediate stability as they prepare for another demanding campaign.
