Ronald Araujo is set to join Liverpool on loan from Barcelona on Monday, and the deal comes with an option to buy the player permanently.

The 27-year-old arrives at Anfield to provide much needed cover at centre-back and right-back, with several key defenders likely to be sidelined for the start of the season.

Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are all recovering from injury, while Ibrahima Konate departed on a free transfer to Real Madrid earlier this summer. Jeremy Jacquet, meanwhile, has yet to feature in pre-season after a serious shoulder injury and a subsequent minor issue.

Araujo has undergone his medical ahead of completing his loan move to Liverpool, which is “expected” to be announced on Monday afternoon, according to Sky Sports News.

The report claims that the deal includes an option to buy the Uruguay international for around £47.14 million (€55m).

Araujo joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018 and has since gone on to make 213 first-team appearances in all competitions, winning three La Liga titles and three Copa del Reys.

Liverpool are evidently in need of defensive reinforcements, if pre-season is anything to go by. The Reds gave up a two-lead to lose 3-2 to AS Monaco in Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge at Anfield on Sunday, meaning the team has now conceded nine goals in four pre-season matches.

The Merseyside outfit face Como in their final friendly before the new Premier League season gets underway, with their opening game coming against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
