Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis has deepened after midweek victory

Endo, who was playing at full-back against Sunderland on Wednesday, was stretched off in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

The Japan international was deputising at right-back for the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai as Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are also on the treatment table, with the former ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

“We still need to do some assessment but it is clear and obvious that he will be out for quite a long time,” Arne Slot said of Endo in the pre-match press conference.

“He is a good centre-back and midfielder as well. In those positions, we are quite vulnerable over there as well if something happens.”

The helpful thing for Slot is that Szoboszlai’s suspension was just for one match - and in the Premier League - and the Hungarian is in line to return for the cup tie.

Joe Gomez was also amongst the substitutes on Wearside, and he returned from his own injury problem to replace Endo on 69 minutes.

Gomez’s return could also mean a rest for either Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate at Anfield, with the pair having played a lot of minutes as Liverpool’s only two fit senior centre-backs in the Englishman’s absence.

At left-back, Andy Robertson played ahead of Milos Kerkez against Sunderland, and it remains to be seen who will get the nod this weekend.

In the engine room, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were the double pivot, although one could drop out in favour of Curtis Jones.

Cody Gakpo could move up front in that case to hand Hugo Ekitike a rest, with the forward now the Reds’ only recognised striker after Alexander Isak’s broken leg.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Szoboszlai, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Jones; Salah, Wirtz, Chiesa; Gakpo

Injured: Endo, Isak, Leoni, Frimpong, Bradley
