Mike Maignan’s future at Milan is moving steadily towards a summer farewell, with the French goalkeeper increasingly oriented to leaving on a free transfer once his contract expires in July.

Despite his importance to the team, talks over a renewal have been frozen for months, ever since the club failed to follow through on an earlier promise of a €5 million extension, according to reports via CalcioMercato.

New sporting director Igli Tare still intends to reopen dialogue with Maignan’s agents, but the gap between the parties remains significant.

On the pitch, Maignan has been one of Milan’s defining figures this season.

The Rossoneri have conceded only two goals in six major clashes against Juventus, Inter, Napoli, Roma, Bologna and Atalanta, a transformation built on organisation and the Frenchman’s consistent excellence.

His return to the levels of the 2021-22 Scudetto run has been evident, helped by a more stable working relationship with goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi.

Chelsea remain in pole position after establishing an agreement with Maignan last summer, while Juventus have also registered interest, though a move within Serie A is considered complicated.

Milan still hope for a late breakthrough, but the chances are slim as Maignan increasingly looks towards a Premier League challenge.
