Sunderland great Marco Gabbiadini says circumstances counted against Arthur Masuaku as the left-back’s brief spell on Wearside came to an end.

"There was a couple of games where he did play and he did fine. Maybe it was just there weren’t the injuries or players missing in his position and then he got a little bit frustrated, didn’t he?"

He was speaking to BBC Newcastle.

Masuaku signed a two-year deal last summer as part of the overhaul that followed promotion to the Premier League. He debuted in the Carabao Cup against Huddersfield Town, then made three league outings, a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa before starts against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

He spent the second half of the season on loan at French club Lens, then completed a move to Turkish side Konyaspor on Monday.

"Sometimes you just don’t fancy a player, it’s personal choice. But wish him well and hope he goes on to have a good season."
