Palmeiras and Corinthians met again in the 2000 Libertadores semi-final, the tie settled on penalties after a 3-2 second-leg win for Palmeiras, with Marcos centre stage and unexpected help from a TV newsroom.
According to Nosso Palestra, with information scarcer 26 years ago, goalkeeping coach Carlos Pracidelli asked Helô Campanholo of TV Bandeirantes to collect recent Corinthians spot-kicks before the second leg on 6 June.
Helô, aided by fellow Palmeiras fan Marquinhos, compiled and edited the footage, then delivered a videocassette at training. In the team hotel, Pracidelli sat Marcos, Sérgio and Marcelo down to study the takers.
After a 4-3 defeat in the first leg, Palmeiras levelled the tie with that 3-2 win and, as Pracidelli anticipated, it went to a shootout. Despite rehearsed corners, Marcos initially dived the other way, then on the fifth attempt, Marcelinho’s, he followed the plan and saved. Pracidelli recalls the taker beginning to celebrate before seeing the stop.
At Morumbi, Helô stuck to a vow made after the 1999 final, refusing to watch and walking the corridors during the kicks. Post-match, she entered a lift with Marcelinho’s wife and young children, noted their sadness and, caught in the euphoria, told them that someone had to cry.
