Marcos Llorente has unexpectedly retired from Spain duty at 31, a month and a half after lifting the World Cup. The player said in a post that it was a personal, carefully considered and heartfelt decision made before the summer, irrespective of selection.

The Atlético full-back accepted some would not understand, and noted he was aware he could have continued for Spain if he kept performing. He added that his choice is final.
