Marcos Rojo is set to return to Estudiantes from Racing Club after a verbal agreement was reached, according to TyC Sports. The 36-year-old has pushed for a final chapter at his boyhood club and a tilt at continental honours.

Negotiations were protracted, with Racing Club initially reluctant and sporting director Diego Milito holding firm before approving the move. The switch would mark a third spell in La Plata as his career winds down.

Estudiantes pressed amid a defensive shortage before their Copa Libertadores semi-final with Flamengo. Alexander Medina will be without the suspended Leandro Gonzalez Pirez and Tomas Palacios for the first leg due to yellow-card accumulation.

While Racing Club’s official confirmation is pending, the financial framework is in place. Estudiantes have offered about $800,000 for the remaining three months of Rojo’s contract, plus bonuses for each win he plays in.

Rojo skipped recent sessions at the Tita Mattiusi complex and agreed to waive a significant portion of the debt Racing Club owed him to accelerate the move. He is expected to sign on Monday on a deal running to December 2027.

The return also offers a chance to repair relations after a failed 2020 homecoming was followed by a move to Boca Juniors. Across two earlier stints he made 54 appearances, scored four goals, and won the 2009 Copa Libertadores.

His arrival would hand Medina an experienced leader at a critical moment. Integration will begin immediately if the contract is signed, with Flamengo looming and another final in sight.
