The defeat against Besiktas on Thursday night (4-1) was the fourth in a row in all competitions for Olympique de Marseille. The positive start to the season, a 4-0 win over RC Strasbourg Alsace on the opening day, is now a distant memory for OM and Bruno Genesio.

Les Phocéens have since lost to AS Monaco, Paris FC, and Stade Rennais in the league, and a defeat in Turkiye last night ensured a losing start to their UEFA Europa League campaign. OM’s squad has been decimated due to the club’s financial situation. It has forced Genesio to integrate youth players as well as players who had been deemed surplus to requirements.

Genesio: ‘It may take some time to rediscover the OM that we all want.’

The overall quality within the squad, as well as its depth have been considerably compromised. It is showing in the results and in the performances. “What is difficult is that the matches all look the same. At one point of the game, we throw the tactics out of the window,” said the former Lille OSC, Stade Rennais, and Olympique Lyonnais manager.

Genesio then admitted, “These aren’t the best moments of my career, that is for sure.” He added that “It may take some time to rediscover the OM that we all want.” It doesn’t get any easier for Marseille, who face Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique on Sunday.
