The club said in a statement that the decision was difficult and the chairman thanked Cifuentes for his total commitment and tireless work.

Saturday’s home defeat to relegation-threatened Oxford proved the final straw in an inconsistent campaign. Supporters called for his removal in front of chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, attending the King Power Stadium for the first time in two months.

His future was settled at a board meeting on Sunday. He won 10 of his 29 Championship matches, leaving City 14th, their lowest tally at this stage since 2007-08, when they were relegated to League One.

There are 17 matches left, a play-off spot seems unlikely but not impossible, and a points deduction could yet drag them towards a relegation fight.

First team coach Andy King will take charge for now, with Charlton visiting the King Power next Saturday.
