We are on World Cup time, but the MLS is also there, baby. First, the USMNT just gave a football masterclass against Paraguay on their World Cup debut.
One thing is a fact: Mauricio Pochettino found the starting team and its substitutes to make the most of this tournament.
Additionally, in the match between the US and Albirroja, Matt Freese was arguably the least tested player on the field, simply because he had very little to do.
Although he did not have much influence on the match, the New York City FC goalkeeper still reached a milestone by being on the field with the team.
By starting in goal for the U.S. Men’s National Team in its opening FIFA World Cup match against Paraguay, Matt Freese became the first active MLS player to start a World Cup match in goal for the U.S.
The New York City FC goalkeeper played the entire match against Paraguay. Let’s be honest, he didn’t have a good clash.
Paraguay managed just two shots on target against the United States, with one of them resulting in the South Americans' only goal of the match. With only one saved, Freese was one of the few players who left much to be desired.
He benefited from the strong defensive performances of Ream, Richards, Freeman, and Robinson, which limited the Paraguayans' offensive threats and kept his workload minimal.
Now, their next stop is Australia, a team that doesn’t seem too important, but could surprise anyone. During Qatar 2022, they complicated Argentina in the Round of 16.
Nevertheless, Matt Freese’s milestone is further evidence of the bright future ahead for MLS. This World Cup is proving that the league has exciting prospects capable of making a real impact on the world stage.
