FIFA has delayed Mexico v England’s World Cup last-16 kick-off at the Azteca by one hour because of thunderstorms over Mexico City since midday Sunday. L'Équipe reports the match will now begin at seven pm local time.

That change pushes the start in France from two am to three am.

With the rain still falling, around 80,000 fans are filling the wait by singing along to music blasted over the stadium PA system.

A similar scenario played out on Tuesday, when Mexico’s meeting with Ecuador, which finished 2-0, was also held back by an hour.

FIFA had seriously considered bringing this fixture forward to midday local. Strong resistance from the Mexican and English federations, and Brazil’s, meant the original slot was kept.
