Millwall believe they are well placed regarding Femi Azeez despite Brighton interest, though there had been growing expectation the winger could head to the Amex before the 11pm deadline.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Monday evening that Millwall had rejected a package worth more than £12 million from Albion, and that Azeez was keen on the move.

Those close to Millwall believe the offer fell well short of their valuation, and with the player under contract until 2028, the Championship club consider themselves in control. Hull City and European clubs are also understood to be pursuing him.

Head coach Alex Neil said January brought interest and bids for Azeez. He added that if rivals tried to undercut Millwall, the club did not need to sell, a stance he said left them in a strong position.

Azeez has become one of the Championship’s more exciting attackers after spells in non-league and at Reading. He can play on either flank but is most effective cutting in from the right.

Albion’s deadline-day focus was likely to include a push for the 25-year-old, while some fans also hoped for a midfield signing after the summer exits of Carlos Baleba and James Milner. Recent matches have seen Albion start without a genuine winger, with Kaoru Mitoma and Yakuba Minteh injured.
