Monaco captain Denis Zakaria has withdrawn from Switzerland duty with adductor pain and will spend the international break in treatment.

The Swiss federation announced on Monday that the 69-cap midfielder had pulled out, describing him as not fully fit.

After Monaco’s strong start, leaders of Ligue 1, Zakaria was among about 10 first-team players called up for international action.

He had been managing adductor discomfort for a few days and Friday’s 2-1 win over Lens appeared to aggravate it. Unlike the first four matchdays he did not complete the 90 minutes, with Filipe Luis replacing him on 76 minutes.

He jogged off to exchange a hand slap with Pape Cabral and showed no obvious discomfort at the time, though the former Mönchengladbach player seemed to tire in the second half.

Asked post-match about the change, he kept it vague, saying it was a physical issue, that it should be fine, and that they would see.

He will remain in the Principality for treatment to maximise his recovery. With this year’s September break longer, he has a little more time to return. Any absence after the restart would be viewed as a blow for Monaco, given his partnership with Lamine Camara is a cornerstone of the side.
