MP-SP challenges Tuma over suspended Corinthians probes in letter on judicial intervention

MP-SP prosecutor Cássio Conserino has challenged Romeu Tuma Júnior’s suspension of Corinthians’ internal probes into alleged misuse of the club’s corporate card, in a letter to Luiz Ambra Neto, who leads the civil inquiry into possible judicial intervention. According to Meu Timao, the probes cover the tenures of Andrés Sanchez, Duilio Monteiro Alves and Augusto Melo.

The exchange came a day after Tuma, president of the club’s Conselho Deliberativo, had rebutted an earlier notice. Hours after Friday’s letter, he revoked the suspension. The civil inquiry is paused pending a ruling on a club appeal.

In the ten-page document, Conserino tells Ambra of alleged irregularities that could inform the civil case. He says he urged Tuma to restart inquiries, arguing that measures against Andrés Sanchez did not bar contact with club bodies.

He disputes waiting for a judge’s authorisation, says prosecutors must oversee compliance and calls Tuma’s rationale weak. He adds that confidentiality does not stop internal proceedings because the decision is already public.

Conserino also rejects claims of poor communication with the board and plans to access case files, saying only president Osmar Stabile, via the legal department, has that right.

He argues Tuma’s orders breach the Statute, Administrative Rules and Code of Ethics, and could amount to reckless management, potentially supporting judicial intervention, by blocking internal accountability, since the autonomy of club bodies is not absolute.

He says remote testimony is feasible, as the Ethics and Discipline Commission can notify subjects electronically, and asks the Public and Social Assets unit to examine the case, alleging deviation of purpose and potential joint liability under the General Sports Law.
