Multi-million deals and home runs: Why Bayern is extending Eberl’s contract | OneFootball

Max Eberl has apparently impressed FC Bayern’s leadership with his work to date. The sporting director is set to receive an early contract extension. His track record in transfers and the development of the roster are said to have played a particularly important role in the decision.

The signs point clearly toward an extension for Max Eberl. After the 52-year-old’s future had been the subject of repeated speculation in recent months, a long-term partnership with FC Bayern now appears to be taking shape.

It was recently reported that President Herbert Hainer is said to have informed the sporting director of the decision in principle. Final approval is expected at the supervisory board meeting on August 25. Afterward, both sides will need to agree on the specific terms of the contract.

It comes as no surprise that Bayern wants to continue with Eberl. Since taking office in the spring of 2024, the sporting director has made numerous important personnel decisions and has gradually rebuilt the squad of Germany’s record champion.

One of his most important decisions was, ironically, one that initially raised many eyebrows: the signing of Vincent Kompany.

After the difficult search for a coach in 2024, the Belgian was by no means the obvious solution. In the meantime, however, the decision has paid off. Kompany led Bayern back to success and most recently won the domestic double. Internationally, the Munich team also reached the semifinals of the Champions League.

Olise and Díaz proved to be perfect signings

Eberl has also made several successful signings in the transfer market. Michael Olise, in particular, quickly developed into one of FC Bayern’s most important players after his move from Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman has become virtually indispensable to Munich’s offense and has significantly increased his market value since his transfer.

Luis Díaz also proved to be a home run. When the Colombian was signed, there were certainly some critical voices due to his age and the transfer fee. On the field, however, the attacking player quickly repaid the trust placed in him.

During this summer’s transfer window, Eberl continued along the same lines. Munich demonstrated particular foresight with Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari. Bayern secured both players before their strong performances at the World Cup thrust them even further into the international spotlight.

With Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, the club also signed a player whose potential particularly impresses Kompany.

However, the internal evaluation of Eberl’s work is not solely about the quality of the new signings. At the same time, the 52-year-old has driven forward the personnel and financial restructuring of the squad.

During his tenure, high-profile players such as Kingsley Coman and Matthijs de Ligt were sold, generating significant transfer revenue. Most recently, the departures of several second-string players collectively brought in more than 30 million euros for the Munich club.

However, Eberl’s work this summer is not quite complete. With João Palhinha, Sacha Boey, and Bryan Zaragoza, there are still three players on the roster for whom permanent solutions should be found if possible.

These particular players could further improve Eberl’s transfer record before Deadline Day.

Equally important is the evolution of the salary structure. With the departures of several top earners, such as Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka, Bayern has been able to significantly reduce its personnel costs. At the same time, the club has succeeded in securing key players on long-term contracts.

Eberl has thus mastered a balancing act that was one of his most important tasks when he took office: The squad was to become competitive again at the highest level on the field, while at the same time being structured in a more financially sustainable manner.

After a little over two and a half years, Bayern’s leadership appears to be satisfied with the progress made. The upcoming contract extension would therefore not only be a vote of confidence in Eberl but also a clear signal that the course set at Säbener Straße is to be continued in the long term.
