Sheffield Wednesday are seeking a resolution to their transfer embargo that runs until January 2027
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that they remain in discussions with the EFL regarding their transfer embargo following a fresh six-point deduction penalty.
The Owls were handed a second penalty by the EFL earlier on Monday due to a breach of their financial rules regarding obligatory payments.
Previous owner Dejphon Chansiri oversaw the late payments of wages to players and staff on multiple occasions prior to the club going into administration on 24 October.
The Championship side were automatically hit with a 12 point deduction penalty as a consequence of going into administration, while they were also handed a transfer fee embargo until January 2027 back in June.
Sheffield Wednesday have been able to register free agents and loan signings since then, recently adding the likes of Liam Cooper and Nathan Redmond to Henrik Pedersen’s first team squad, but they have been barred from paying a fee to sign someone.

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that they are still in discussions with the EFL regarding their appeal against the transfer embargo placed on them under Chansiri’s ownership.
They have claimed that a resolution is likely to be found upon their exit from administration, which should come from the completion of a takeover by a new owner.
“The EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window,” wrote the club, via their official website.
“This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration
“No further comment will be made at this time.”
A number of parties have been linked with a potential takeover at Hillsborough, with Begbies Traynor appointed as administrators.
Begbies Traynor have opened the door to offers as they seek a replacement for Chansiri, with the likes of Mike Ashley (pictured below) and John McEvoy among the names interested in the Championship team.
Pedersen’s side are rooted to the bottom of the second division table with a tally of minus 10.
Next up for the Owls is a trip to face Blackburn Rovers on 6 December in a 3pm kick-off.

If the club are unable to make any permanent, non-free agent signings through all of 2026, then that will immediately be a setback for the next Sheffield Wednesday owner.
It remains to be seen who they will be, but they will surely be keen to find a resolution that allows for some spending, as we have seen in the past that clubs like West Brom were placed under a business plan by the EFL last year amid their own financial issues.
Finding a similar solution may be the best path forward so that players can be signed by at least the summer, as punishing the Owls for problems caused by someone no longer associated with the club would be harsh.
With relegation an almost certainty at this point, the embargo remaining in place for January wouldn’t be too big of an issue for a new owner, but it would be quite punishing if they cannot sign anyone for a fee for next season.
