The Magpies now need to replace both parts of one of the best central midfield partnerships in the country in less than a month. It’s going to be a huge challenge, and the sooner they can tick off one part of that double issue the better.

Newcastle prepare for second attempt to sign Nmecha

A report from TeamTalk’s transfer guru Graeme Bailey claims that new manager Matthias Jaissle has requested Borussia Dortmund man Felix Nmecha as his number one target.

There has already been contact between the clubs over Nmecha this summer – but Newcastle baulked at the €100m asking price for the German international.

Since then, however, they’ve had a massive injection of cash from their sales, while also increasing their need to sign a player in that position. It still feels unlikely they reach nine figures, but a compromise can probably be found somewhere beneath that.

Nmecha has a £75m release clause active next summer that is putting teams off overpaying this year – but the fees that English clubs have paid of more than £100m for Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers are giving Dortmund confidence they will get what they want.
