Santos have paid R$ 12 million to Monaco to lift a Fifa transfer ban imposed since early July, and are now awaiting the arrival of midfielder Arthur to bolster the squad.

The club said in a statement that the operation was made possible by support from NR Sports, the Neymar family company, which provided immediate funding. In return, Santos and NR Sports will jointly negotiate kit properties not yet commercialised. The payment settles a debt arising from the Jean Lucas deal, the player now at Bahia.

Arthur, formerly of Grêmio and Brazil, is set to sign a short four-month contract until 31 December, with an option to extend by one year. He is expected to arrive in the Baixada Santista in the coming days to complete the deal.

The move was suggested to the board by Neymar. Arthur had been on loan at Grêmio, was returned to Juventus, and last week agreed to terminate his deal with the Italian club.

Santos agreed terms with Arthur in recent days but waited for the ban to be cleared before proceeding. The midfielder would be their first signing of this transfer window, with further business sought despite financial constraints.
