Villarreal winger Nicolas Pepe went out of the 2026 World Cup as Ivory Coast lost 2-1 to Norway in the last 32. It was a bitter farewell after a campaign in which he reasserted himself.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he was among Ivory Coast’s standout performers, notably scoring twice against Curaçao in a 0-2 group win that sealed progression. That night restored his prominence, goals and confidence at a delicate moment for his side.

He started the opener against Ecuador and again carried attacking weight. He then lost his place versus Germany, before returning to the XI to decide the Curaçao match with two goals.

In the last 32, Pépé started against Norway alongside Bonny and Yan Diomande. Amad Diallo levelled after the break, but Haaland’s late strike ended the African side’s adventure.

He leaves with three starts, two goals and a decisive role in Ivory Coast’s best spell of the tournament. He is the first Villarreal player to be eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. For the club, his displays also served as a shop window, Pépé showing one-v-one threat, experience and finishing in high-pressure games.
