The latest addition to the Barcelona conveyer belt of possible legendary managers has been put in motion in the last 24 hours, with Sergio Busquets having taken the first step in his coaching career. The 38-year-old, who retired from football last December, has decided against the following the path of Xavi or Andres Iniesta – instead choosing to start in-house at La Masia.
Earlier in the summer, it was reported that Busquets could be set to re-join Barcelona in a coaching capacity, and that has now been confirmed. The legendary midfielder has been appointed as an assistant to Barca Atletic head coach Juliano Belletti, with whom he narrowly avoided crossing paths with during their respective playing careers.
“Sergio Busquets joins Barça Atlético as an assistant coach on Monday. The Barça legend joins Juliano Belletti’s team to bring his experience and football knowledge to the Barça team while he takes the coaching course.”
Given that he has been appointed as an assistant coach at Barca Atletic, there is every chance that Busquets will end up becoming manager of the subsidiary side when Belletti leaves. If he does so, he could end up following in the footsteps of Pep Guardiola or Luis Enrique, both of whom were in charge of the B team before ultimately ending up having very successful spells as Barcelona head coach.
Busquets certainly has all of the makings to be a top manager in the future. He was one of the most intelligent players in the Barcelona squad during his 16-year stay as a player, so he will hope that his methods ultimately lead him to follow the likes of Guardiola or Luis Enrique, although that will surely be far from his thinking right now – first, he must focus on assisting Belletti.
